TotalEnergies has inaugurated the Hydra project, a 216 MW solar with a 500 MWh BESS hybrid facility in South Africa’s Northern Cape province (TotalEnergies press release, 16/07/2026).
The project should supply 75 MW of dispatchable renewable electricity to the national grid under a 20-year PPA signed with Eskom, representing more than 400 GWh/year of electricity or the equivalent to the consumption of about 200,000 South African households.
The Hydra project was developed by a consortium composed of TotalEnergies (35%), Hydra Storage Holding (35%) and Reatile Renewables (30%), as part of South Africa’s Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme launched by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
