TEC H2 MAG, a subsidiary of the French energy group TotalEnergies, has applied for an environmental permit to develop a US$16bn green hydrogen and ammonia project in Chile. The H2 Magallanes consists of a 5 GW wind power plant including 616 wind turbines rated 8 MW each, to power seven electrolysis centres with a total capacity of 3.85 GW, which will produce green hydrogen from desalinated and demineralised seawater. The facility will also have a desalination plant, an ammonia production plant with an estimated production of 1.9 Mt/year, four storage tanks of 60,000 m3 and a maritime infrastructure for shipping.
The H2 Magallanes is expected to begin operations in 2030, considering a two-year period for the environmental assessment process and construction works being scheduled for 2027.
The project ties in with Chile’s ambition to become a leader in the production of green hydrogen via electrolysis, aiming to reach a capacity of 28 GW and 2.7 Mt/year of green hydrogen by 2030.
