TotalEnergies plans 1 GW onshore wind+300 MW/600 MWh BESS project in Kazakhstan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering a senior secured loan to finance the construction of a 1 GW onshore wind project coupled with a 300 MW/600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) near the village of Mirny, in the Zhambyl region in Kazakhstan (EBRD press release).

The US$1.4bn project also includes construction of transmission infrastructure required for evacuation of generated renewable energy, including three 500 kV overhead transmission lines of 231 km length and upgrade of the existing 500 kV Shu and Yukgress substations.

The US$1.4bn project, led by Total Eren, a subsidiary of the French energy company TotalEnergies with a 60% stake in partnership with KMG Green Energy (KazMunayGas, 20%) and Qazaq Green Power (Samruk-Kazyna, 20%), had signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) in June 2023, to sell the entire power production to the Financial Settlement Center of Renewable Energy, a public entity owned by the Kazakh Government, to supply the national grid. When operational, the Mirny wind project could eliminate nearly 2.5 MtCO2/year.
