TotalEnergies exits from offshore gas fields in South Africa

The French energy group TotalEnergies has announced its withdrawal from the offshore gas Block 11B/12B in South Africa. The gas fields stakes are currently distributed among TotalEnergies EP South Africa (45%), Qatar Petroleum (25%), CNR International (20%) and the South African consortium Main Street 1549 (10%). The blocks cover a 19,000 km2 area and there have been two major gas discoveries in the area since TotalEnergies entered the field in 2013 (Brulpadda and Luiperd in the Outeniqua basin). However, the sites have encountered issues for their commercial development due to environmental considerations. The announcement comes after CNR International (20%) and Qatar Petroleum (25%) decided to withdraw from the 11B/12B field. According to the partnership agreement, the withdrawing parties will be transferring their stakes free of charge to those that remain in the partnership.

TotalEnergies has also decided to exit from offshore exploration Block 5/6/7, in which it currently holds a 40% stake. Besides these Blocks 11B/12B and 5/6/7, TotalEnergies holds Exploration Rights over four offshore Blocks in South Africa: Block Deep Water Orange Basin (DWOB, west coast), Orange Basin Deep (west coast), Outeniqua South (south coast) for exploration and well drilling of hydrocarbon, and Block 3B/4B east of DWOB.
