The French oil and gas company TotalEnergies has announced the commissioning of France’s first LNG floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in the port of Le Havre (northern France). The FSRU Cape Ann has a regasification capacity of 5 bcm/year, corresponding to more than 10% of French consumption, and a storage capacity of 142,500 cm.
According to TotalEnergies, the terminal has injected its first MWh of gas into the French grid operated by GRTgaz, using LNG from Norway. TotalEnergies has contracted 50% of the terminal's annual capacity, while the remaining capacity will be marketed according to rules approved by the regulator. The FSRU was built in 2010 by the Norwegian maritime energy infrastructure company Höegh LNG. It berthed in Le Havre port in mid-September 2023.
As of end-2022, France’s LNG regasification capacity stood at 33 bcm/year. Natural gas consumption in the country reached 38 bcm in 2022 (down from an average of 42 bcm/year since 2016).
