TotalEnergies advances US$27bn Ratawi oilfield expansion in Iraq

France’s TotalEnergies has announced the launch of the second development phase at Iraq's Ratawi oilfield, along with the start of construction of an associated seawater treatment plant, marking the final stages of a US$27bn multi-energy project.

In 2023, TotalEnergies initiated the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP) in Iraq. This project includes four components: recovering gas currently flared at three southern Iraqi oil fields to supply power plants, redeveloping the Ratawi oilfield, constructing a 1.25 GWp solar park, and building a seawater treatment facility. The project is jointly led by TotalEnergies (45%), Iraq’s state-owned Basra Oil Company (30%), and QatarEnergy (25%).

The initial redevelopment phase of the Ratawi oilfield, started by TotalEnergies in late 2023, aims to increase production to 120 kb/d by early 2026. The newly launched second phase targets nearly doubling production to 210 kb/d by 2028 while eliminating routine gas flaring. This phase follows the commencement of construction on a 300 mcf/d (3.1 bcm/year) gas treatment plant and the 1.25 GWp solar park earlier in 2025. With these developments, all components of the GGIP project have now entered their execution phase.
