Total plans to focus on gas and renewables (France)

French energy group Total has unveiled its new climate strategy for the next 20 years, focusing on improving the carbon intensity of its production mix, developing renewable energies and improving energy efficiency.

By 2036, Total aims to reach 60% of gas in its hydrocarbon production and to exit the coal business, withdrawing from coal marketing by the end of 2016 after having divested coal production assets in South Africa in 2015. The group will also seek to expand carbon capture and storage technologies.

Where renewable are concerned, the group aims to increase the share of renewables in its portfolio to 20% by 2036: Total aims to become on of the top three solar player, by expanding its activities across the solar PV chain, including distribution. Total's subsidiary SunPower plans to triple its manufacturing capacity in the coming years. The group also aims at adding energy storage to its activities and at developing bio-energies (conversion of the La Mède refinery in France to produce 0.5 Mt/year of biofuels as of 2017).

Total will also seek to improve its energy efficiency, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions at its facilities.
