Total plans to export Kenyan oil via Uganda and Tanzania

The French company Total plans to export Kenyan crude through the 1,400 km Kampala-Dar pipeline that will link Uganda and Tanzania. With the recent acquisition of Maersk Oil for US$7.5bn, Total now controls a significant portion of Kenya's oil reserves and expects to take advantage of this strategic position to facilitate the export of Kenyan oil to the pipeline it will operate.

The facility is expected to export the oil produced from Kenya through the pipeline that will connect the Hoima Basin in Uganda to the port of Tanga in Tanzania. However, the project would need the agreement of its partners in the South Lokichar oil field (Kenya), Marathon Oil and Tullow Oil. If approved, this project would have far-reaching implications for Kenya’s grand infrastructure project, namely the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport Corridor (Lapsset), which includes an oil pipeline.
