Total energy production in the US reached a new record in 2025

Primary energy production in the United States has increased by 3.4% in 2025, according to the US Energy Information Administration (US EIA press release, 11/05/2026), reaching a new record of 107 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) (nearly 2.7 Gtoe) in 2025.

It was driven by natural gas production, which grew more than 4% to 39 tcf (1,106 bcm), mostly in the Appalachia, Permian, and Haynesville regions, as well as crude oil output, which increased by 3% to 13.6 mb/d, mostly in the Permian region of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. Production of natural gas plant liquids (NGPLs) also grew by 7% to a record 4 tcf (113 bcm). Similarly, renewable energy production increased by 3%, with solar and wind power generation reaching new records, while coal output rose by 4% to 533 million short tons, after two years of decline.

The US is the world’s largest natural gas producing country since 2012, surpassing Russia, and the world’s largest oil producing country since 2017.
