Total acquires a portfolio of 2.2 GW of solar projects in Texas (US)

Total has acquired a development pipeline of 2.2 GW of solar projects and 600 MW of battery storage assets in Texas (United States) from SunChase Power and MAP RE/ES. The portfolio includes four large-scale solar projects, each with co-located battery energy storage systems (BESS), in industrial areas near Houston. The first two solar projects should enter construction in 2021. All projects will be commissioned between 2023 and 2024. The group is expected to sign a 1 GW corporate PPA sourced from this solar power and energy storage portfolio to cover all the power consumption of electricity-intensive industrial companies in the area (it includes the Port Arthur refinery and petrochemicals plants and two other petrochemical sites).

In January 2021, Total signed an agreement with 174 Power Global, a fully owned subsidiary of the Hanwha Group, to create a 50/50 joint venture in the United States. The new company will develop 12 utility-scale solar and energy storage projects with a combined capacity of 1.6 GW in Texas, Nevada, Oregon, Wyoming, and Virginia. The first solar-storage project entered production in 2020, and the remainder will be commissioned between 2022 and 2024. The projects, initially developed by 174 Power Global, are expected to help total meet its target to achieve 35 GW of renewables capacity worldwide by 2025.
