Danish company Topsoe has been selected as the provider of the electrolyser technology for the Coega green ammonia project in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa (Hive Energy press release, 18/05/2026). The project developers, British Hive Energy (75%) and the South African Built Africa (25%), selected Topsoe to supply its solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) technology and other key equipment to produce hydrogen from renewable electricity which will then be transformed into ammonia.
USD5.8bn Coega project is part of South Africa’s national strategy to invest USD18bn in green hydrogen as part of its Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET IP). The project will be powered by 1.4 GW of solar and almost 1.5 GW of wind capacity, which should be enough to produce up to 1 Mt/year of green ammonia with an 850 MW electrolyser capacity. Engineering studies are scheduled for the third quarter of 2026, while an FID is expected by the third quarter of 2027 and production is expected to start by the end of 2029. The expected commercial operation date is set in 2031.
