Tokyo Gas (Japan) aims to raise electricity customer base by 40% by 2020

Japanese gas group Tokyo Gas has announced plans to increase the number of its electricity customers by about 40% by the end of fiscal year 2020 (March 2021), reaching a customer base of approximately 2.4 million. Besides, the company has confirmed that it is preparing to target investments in overseas infrastructure projects, in particular in LNG and renewable energy projects.

Tokyo Gas started to generate and supply electricity in 2000. The company is also present across a large portion of the gas value chain as it is Japan's largest city gas provider and a major purchaser of LNG. In October 2018, the utility outlined plans to diversify its LNG procurement portfolio and not raise its purchases from the United States. It recently signed agreements to procure LNG from Canada, Mozambique and Mexico, i.e. from Anadarko Petroleum's Mozambique project, Shell's LNG Canada project and Sempra Energy's Energia Costa Azul LNG project in Mexico.
