Tokyo Gas and Centrica purchase 2.6 Mt/year of gas from Mozambique LNG

The British energy group Centrica and the Japanese gas utility Tokyo Gas have signed a non-binding Heads of Agreement (HoA) with the Mozambique Area 1 joint venture partners to jointly purchase 2.6 Mt/year of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Mozambique LNG (MLNG) Project in Mozambique, from the start-up of production (currently expected for 2022-2023) until the early 2040s. In November 2016, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further cooperate in the LNG business.

MLNG consists of two initial LNG trains with a total nameplate capacity of 12 Mt/year and will be located on the Afungi peninsula in the Cabo Delgado province of northern Mozambique. It is being developed by Anadarko (26.5%) in partnership with Mitsui E&P Mozambique (20%), ONGC-OIL (16%), Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH, 15%), Bharat PetroResources (10%), PTTEP (8.5%) and Oil India (4%). It will exploit gas reserves from the Offshore Area 1 in the Rovuma basin (estimated to hold more than 2 100 bcm or 12 Gboe).

In February 2018, Anadarko Petroleum signed a first long-term LNG sales and purchase agreement with the French power utility EDF and agreed to supply 1.2 Mt/year of LNG to EDF over a 15-year period.
