Tokyo Electric is negotiating with Brunei to extend LNG contract beyond 2013

Tokyo Electric Power entered into negotiations to extend its LNG sale and purchase contract with Brunei that is due to expire in March 2013. Tepco has been buying 4.03 Mt/year of LNG from Brunei LNG based on a term contract since 1973, and the contract was already extended for 20 years (1993-2013). Negotiations are scheduled to be completed by end-March 2012. The volumes taken will remain at the current level, or be lower than the current one. Tepco currently has term contracts to buy 18.5 Mt/year of LNG in total with a number of countries including the US, Brunei, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi, Australia, Qatar, Russia and Oman. Besides the Brunei contract, Tepco's term contract with Malaysia is due to expire March 31, 2018, and the one with Abu Dhabi March 31, 2019. Tepco has been buying 4.8 Mt/year of LNG from Malaysia since 1983, and 4.7 Mt/year from Abu Dhabi since 1977. It has concluded a term contract with Papua New Guinea to buy 1.8 Mt/year of LNG from 2013 while it will also buy 4.1 Mt/year from US Chevron's Wheatstone Project in Australia from 2017.
