Japanese power utility Tohoku Electric has decided to delay the completion of safety upgrades at the unit-2 of the Onagawa nuclear power plant and at the unit 1 of its Higashidori nuclear plant, as safety reviews by the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), the Japanese nuclear regulator, will take longer than initially planned.
The company plans to complete construction work of additional safety measures to meet new safety standards with some delays: works should be completed in the second half of fiscal year 2018 (between October 2018 and March 2019) at Onagawa-2 and in fiscal 2019 (April 2019 to March 2020) at Higashidori-1. Completing these construction works is required before the NRA's assessment. Tohoku Electric applied to the NRA for safety assessments of Onagawa-2 and Higashidori-1 in December 2013 and June 2014, respectively.
Five Japanese reactors have already cleared NRA's inspections, met the new regulatory safety standards and resumed operation. Another 19 reactors, including Onagawa-2 and Higashidori-1, have applied to the NRA to restart and are working on their safety reviews.
