Tidal Lagoon Power plans 1.8-2.8 GW tidal power project in the UK

Tidal Lagoon Power (TLP) has started the approval process for a series of tidal lagoons power project in the United Kingdom. The company is already developing a tidal lagoon power plant in Swansea (Wales) and is expecting approval to start construction, with commissioning expected in 2018. Electricity production costs would be very high (£168/MWh, i.e. €230/MWh) and more than twice as high as offshore wind generation costs. TLP is planning to develop up to six additional tidal lagoons; the first one of this new series would be 1,800 - 2,800 MW project, which could start construction in 2018 with commissioning by 2022. Production costs would be much lower, at £90-95/MWh (€124-130/MWh), enabling to compete with offshore wind and nuclear. Proposed sites for the projects are Cardiff, Newport, and Colwyn Bay in Wales; Bridgwater in Somerset; and West Cumbria.

Tidal lagoons technologies capture incoming and outgoing tides behind giant sea walls, and use the weight of the water to power turbines.
