TI plans a 700 MW interconnector between Northern Ireland and Scotland (UK)

TI LirIC, a subsidiary of the British developer Transmission Investment (TI), has filed an application to the Northern Ireland Utilities Regulator for the development of a new 320 kV sub-sea power interconnector linking Northern Ireland and Scotland (United Kingdom), which aims to deliver up to 700 MW of capacity between the Irish Single Electricity Market and the UK’s wholesale electricity market.

The LirIC interconnector, estimated to require an investment of £700m (€811m), will span 130 km and connect Kilroot in the Belfast region (Northern Ireland) to Kilmarnock in the Ayrshire region (Scotland), using two converter stations. The project, whose completion is expected by 2029, will allow excess wind generated power to be shared between the two markets and avoid curtailments.
