Third Estonia-Latvia power interconnection line breaks ground

Estonian power and natural gas transmission system operator (TSO) Elering has started to build the third Estonia-Latvia power interconnection line, which will span across approximately 175 km. It is scheduled to be complete by December 2020 and will include 330 kV and 110 kV sections. The total cost of the works is expected to amount €60m. Once built, this third interconnection will raise the net transfer capacity between the two countries by 600 MW in both directions.

Meanwhile, Elering and its Latvian and Finnish counterparts (Conexus Baltic Grid, Gasum and Baltic Connector) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the harmonization of the regional gas markets in the near future. Estonia and Latvia have already set a goal to fully integrate their gas markets from the beginning of 2020. This memorandum of understanding discusses the matters, terms and definitions which need to be solved if the Baltic countries and Finland decide to proceed with market integration in the future, as of 2020, when the Balticconnector pipeline will connect the Estonian and Finnish gas markets.
