THDC secures 1.2 GW Kalai-II hydropower project in Arunachal Pradesh (India)

The Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC), a subsidiary of the Indian power generation company NTPC, has signed an agreement to acquire the 1.2 GW Kalai-II hydropower project in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh (north-eastern India) from Reliance Power. THDC has also signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the government of Arunachal Pradesh for the implementation of hydropower project. 

The project, located in the Lohit river basin in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh (north-eastern India), is comprised of six 190 MW units and one 60 MW unit with a total estimated cost of INR130bn (US$1.6bn). The hydropower plant is expected to generate 4.85 TWh/year. 

In November 2023, the Indian Government announced plans to develop 13 new hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh, aiming to add 13 GW of power to the national grid. These projects are expected to require a total investment of INR1,400bn (US$16.8bn). At the end of 2022, India had a total hydropower capacity of 51.8 GW (11% of the country’s total installed capacity).
