Thailand's state-held power generator EGAT (Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand) has narrowed its current list of potential LNG suppliers to 12 companies, including Qatargas, Shell, Chevron, Marubeni, Petronas and Total. EGAT will select the one that offers the lowest price to supply up to 1.5 Mt/year of LNG. The future purchasing agreement will be finalised by June 2019 and LNG shipments could begin by September 2019.
EGAT has traditionally purchased natural gas and LNG from a state-run unit of PTT, Thailand's sole gas supplier and LNG importer, but the Thai government seeks to liberalise the energy sector and to boost competition. EGAT has thus received government approval to access up to 1.5 Mt/year of LNG regasification capacity at PTT's Map Ta Phut LNG import terminal between 2019 and 2056. EGAT is also planning to build a new 5 Mt/year floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), which is expected to start operations by 2024, and has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for LNG supplies from Qatargas.
