Texas has been the most energy consuming state since 1960 (US)

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that Texas is the most energy consuming state in the US since 1960 and accounted for 13% of total US total energy consumption in 2015. California ranked second and its share amounts 8% of the total energy consumption. The lowest energy-consuming state is Vermont. In 2015, the total US energy consumption decreased by 1% and 35 states plus the District of Columbia (DC) consumed less energy in 2015 than in 2014.

In terms of total energy consumption per capita, Louisiana ranked the highest in 2015, followed by Wyoming, Alaska, North Dakota and Iowa. According to the EIA, the high value of energy consumption per capita in these states is largely attributable to the energy consumption of the industrial sector, which accounts for more than 50% of the whole energy consumption in each of these states. Louisiana, North Dakota and Alaska are among the US top ten crude oil producing states while Wyoming produces coal and natural gas. The lowest energy consumption per capita in 2015 was in the state of New York, followed by Rhode Island, California, Hawaii and Florida and these low consumption figures reflect the reduced industrial footprint in these states.
