Terna plans to invest €3.9bn in the Italian electricity transport grid

Italian power transmission network operator Terna plans to invest €3.9bn in the development of its electricity grid over the 2015-2019 period. Of this, €3.2bn will be invested in the national electricity grid, 80% of which is committed to the development of new infrastructures and technology. More than €400m will be invested by third parties (so-called “energy-intensive” companies) for the implementation of interconnections pursuant to Law 99/2009. Terna will continue to work on the interconnections with foreign countries such as Piossasco-Grand’Ile, between Italy and France, and Villanova-Tivat, between Italy and Montenegro. The TSO will also double the electrical connection between Sicily and Calabria (Sorgente-Rizziconi) and the extra high voltage power lines Udine-Redipuglia, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Villanova-Gissi, in Abruzzo. Development will also continue on storage systems and smart systems, located mainly on the larger islands and in Southern Italy. Terna is also considering acquiring about 9,300 km of high voltage grid and 420 substations owned by the Italian railway company FS.
