Terna plans to invest €18bn in the Italian power grid over 10 years

The Italian power transmission systemp operator (TSO) Terna plans to invest €18.1bn under its new 10-year "2021 Development Plan" for the national electricity grid (+25% compared to the previous plan). The company intends to build new power interconnectors with nearby countries, such as a 500 MW, 200 km subsea cable with Greece and a 1 GW link between Italy and Switzerland, located near the Italian province of Sondrio, at a cost of €1.2bn.

Domestically, Terna will develop two HVDC lines: the Tyrrhenian Link between Sardinia and Sicily and the Adriatic Link between Abruzzo and Marche with a capacity of 1 GW. Both projects should be commissioned in 2028. In addition, the Italian power grid operator aims to add 380 kV transmission lines between Sicily and Calabria (“Bolano-Paradiso 2”), Montecorvino and Benevento and Basilicata and Campania (“Aliano-Montecorvino”).
