Terna launches consultation on a new 1 GW Italy-Greece interconnection project

The Italian power transmission system operator (TSO) Terna has launched a public consultation on the development of a new 1 GW subsea interconnection project that would link Italy to Greece. The GR.ITA 2 interconnector, valued at €750m, would connect a new converter station in Galatina, southern Italy, to Tesprozia in western Greece and run for 350 km (including 250 km underwater). The 60-day consultation phase launched by Terna comes prior to filing the project for authorisation.

The project aims to increase the interconnection capacity between Greece and Italy, which is currently being provided by a 400 kV and 500 MW submarine cable that was commissioned in 2022.

In 2021, Terna announced plans to invest €18.1bn under its new 10-year development plan for the national electricity grid, which includes building new interconnections with neighbours, including Greece and Switzerland.
