Japanese companies TEPCO, Chubu Electric, Hitachi and Toshiba have agreed to discuss potential collaboration for nuclear energy business for boiling water reactors (BWR). The companies aim to create a sustainable business for safe and economical operation of BWR, as well as the construction and operation of nuclear power plants.
TEPCO and Chubu Electric used to operate nuclear power plants before the Fukushima disaster in March 2011: TEPCO owns the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata prefecture (2 units could be restarted and at least one shutdown), while Chubu Electric owns the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka prefecture. Since then, they have not restarted any reactor, while nuclear manufacturers Hitachi and Toshiba have withdrawn from nuclear reactor construction plans overseas. The four companies bet on their knowledge of operating nuclear power plants and on their experiences as manufacturers to improve the safety and economic viability of the BWR business.
