Nakoso IGCC Power GK and Hirono IGCC Power GK have awarded a consortium led by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) successive full-turnkey orders for the construction of two 540 MW integrated coal gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power units in Fukushima (Japan).
Nakoso IGCC Power GK and Hirono IGCC Power GK were set up in October 2016 by Japanese power utility Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Mitsubishi Corporation Power, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, and project company Joban Joint Power to develop the IGCC projects. One will be built next to Joban's Nakoso power plant in Iwaki city and the other at the site of TEPCO's Hirono thermal power plant in the Futaba District, respectively.
Total investment is estimated at over Yen 300bn (US$2.9bn). The projects have already received environmental approval and are expected to start operations in September 2020 in the case of the Nakoso plant and in September 2021 in the case of the Hirono plant.
