TEPCO and partners set up JV for two 540 MW IGCC projects in Japan

Japanese power utility Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Mitsubishi Corporation Power, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, and project company Joban Joint Power have established two joint ventures, Nakoso IGCC Power GK and Hirono IGCC Power GK, for the construction and operation of two 540 MW class integrated coal gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power units in Fukushima (Japan).

This follows the announcement of the signature a letter of intent in August 2015. Nakoso IGCC Power GK and Hirono IGCC Power GK will each set up and operate a 540 MW Integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant, one next to Joban's Nakoso power plant in Iwaki city and the other at the site of TEPCO's Hirono thermal power plant in the Futaba District, respectively. Total investment is estimated at over Yen 300bn (US$2.9bn). The projects have already received environmental approval and are expected to start operations in September 2020 in the case of the Nakoso plant and in September 2021 in the case of the Hirono plant.
