Tenaga Nasional will build a 2.1 GW CCGT power plant in central Malaysia

The Malaysian power company Tenaga Nasional Berhad, through its subsidiary TNB Power Generation, has received a Letter of Intent from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources for the development of a 2.1 GW combined cycle gas power plant which will be located in the city of Kapar, in the state of Selangor (central Malaysia).

The project will be carried out in collaboration with Malaysia’s Widad Business Group, which will develop the plant through a joint venture with TNB Power Generation. The project is scheduled to achieve a commercial operation date by 2031, and represents an estimated investment of MYR9.5bn (US$2bn).

In addition, TNB Power Generation announced it will repower the 651 MW Sungai Perak hydropower plant. The company has received approval from the Malaysian Energy Commission to implement the Hydro Life Extension Programme for six stations in Sungai Perak for an investment of MYR5.8bn (US$1.2bn).

At the end of 2021, natural gas represented 41% of Malaysia’s installed capacity with 15.8 GW and 35 % of its power generation with about 60 TWh. Prior to this announcement the country had 5.3 GW of gas-fired projects under development. The hydro installed capacity surpassed 6 GW (16%).
