Temelin NPP project could be taken over by CEZ's spin-off (Czech Rep.)

The Czech government has recommended that national power company CEZ take the lead in the construction of new nuclear plants in the country. The Czech Republic would prefer CEZ (70% state owned) to create a subsidiary to take over the construction and operation of at least two nuclear reactors at the existing sites of Dukovany and Temelin. CEZ would have to find a partner (financial investor) in case it is not able to finance the project. A third option would be the creation of a state-owned company to be in charge of the project.

In April 2014, the Czech government refused to provide state guarantees for the price of electricity to be generated at the new units, prompting CEZ to cancel a tender for the selection of the contractor; Areva had been disqualified and Atomstroyexport (Russia) and Westinghouse (US) remained the sole bidders. All three have expressed interest in a new tender and other Asian companies (KEPCO from South Korea) would also be interested. CEZ has suspended any formal tender process until the definition of a new energy strategy in the Czech Republic.
