The French engineering company Technip Energies has been selected by the Italian renewables developer Renexia to perform the front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the 2.8 GW Med Wind floating offshore wind project, which will be located 60 km off the island of Sicily (southern Italy). The scope of work covers the FEED for the 190 floating foundations and moorings for the wind turbines and the conceptual design for the floating offshore substations.
Renexia, a subsidiary of Toto Holding, announced the development of the project, which is expected to supply power to more than 3 million Italian househoulds, in September 2022. Renexia also awarded Fugro, a Dutch engineering company, a survey contract to produce detailed marine geophysical and environmental surveys in order to determine the feasibility of the project.
As of end-2021, Italy had no operational offshore wind capacity but had more than 11 GW of onshore wind (9% of the country’s installed capacity and 7% of its power generation with 21 TWh). Italy currently has nearly 17 GW of wind projects (onshore and offshore) under development.
