TAURON plans a 767 MW/3 GWh pumped-storage hydropower plant in Poland

TAURON has announced the signature of a letter of intent with the Polish Ministry of Energy for the development of a 767 MW pumped-storage hydropower plant in Rożnów (Poland) (TAURON press release, 13/07/2026). It should also increase the balancing capabilities of the Polish grid, offering a storage capacity of 3.1 GWh.

The project is currently at its preparatory stage, with the company having secured most of the land for the project and conditions for the connection to the grid being obtained. TAURON expects to develop the project over the 2028-2033 period

Members of the Polish government have declared the importance of securing independent renewable energy for the country’s national security and the necessity to develop large-scale energy storage facilities to safely promote the energy transition.
