Tasmania (Australia) opens consultations for a 1 GW renewable energy zone

The Australian state of Tasmania has launched a consultation to outline the boundaries of its proposed first renewable energy zone (REZ), in its North West region. The proposed North West REZ is located south of the port city of Burnie on the land of the Noeteeler people. Covering over 114,000 ha of land, the REZ plans to be established within four municipal areas with an expected renewable energy capacity of 1 GW. At this stage, two planned wind projects are inside the REZ boundary as it is currently proposed by Ark Energy, namely the 450 MW Guildford wind park and the 300 MW Hellyer wind project. The consultation process will be carried out until 1 July 2024.

Renewable Energy Zones are areas with high quality renewable resources such as wind and solar, and enable more efficient coordination of investment and development, while considering important environmental, heritage and social values. At the end of 2023, Australia had a power capacity of 106 GW, of which solar accounted for 32%, and wind for 11%; solar accounted for 16% of total power generation in 2023 and wind for 11%.
