Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) has signed a 24-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) to build, own, and operate the 1 GW Al Dhafra Open-Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) project in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). TAQA is leading the OCGT project with a 100% ownership, while TAQA Transmission will develop the associated power infrastructure.
The OCGT project will add to the recently announced world-first ‘round-the-clock’ giga-scale project by EWEC and Masdar, which comprises 5.2 GW of solar PV and 19 GWh of battery storage to dispatch 1 GW of renewable energy 24 hours a day seven days a week. These new projects raise total investments by EWEC, TAQA, and Masdar in energy supply infrastructure in Abu Dhabi to AED36bn (US$9.8bn), including 75% for renewable and conventional power generation and 25% for grid infrastructures.
