Tanzania expects to sign a deal on the US$42bn LNG project in June 2026

Tanzania has announced its plans to sign an agreement to restart its stalled US$42bn LNG project (CNBC Africa, 26/01/2026). According to the country’s Minister of State for Planning and Investment, the government has closed commercial negotiations and is finalising legal issues, planning to sign an agreement by June 2026.

The project is being developed a consortium led by Equinor and Shell in partnership with ExxonMobil, Pavilion Energy, Medco Energi, and state-owned TPDC. The government estimates that production could start up in about 8 years and, once developed, the project is expected to unlock over 47 tcf (1,335 bcm) of natural gas deposits.

The LNG project was stalled after Tanzania proposed changes to a financial agreement concluded in 2023, with the parties failing to reach a final investment decision (FID).
