The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved the rollout of 375 MW/1,500 MWh battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the Indian state to support renewable power supply. Three developers have been selected to install the BESS projects under the build-operate-transfer model over a 12 to 15 year period, namely:
- Eagle Infra India will install 175 MW/700 MWh
- OPG Power Generation will add another 175 MW/700 MWh
- Onward Solar Power will deploy the remaining 25 MW/100 MWh
This plan is part of Tamil Nadu’s broader clean energy strategy, which includes scaling up renewable capacity and improving round the clock supply reliability. In 2024, TN Green Energy Corporation awarded contracts to NLCIL, Bondada and Oriana Power to develop 1,000 MWh of BESS projects.
