Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has announced that state-owned CPC will invest up to USD4.4bn in the Alaska LNG project in the United States and purchase 6 Mt/year of LNG once production begins (MOEA press release, 14/10/2026). “The Ministry of Economic Affairs pointed out that the Alaska LNG project has a geographical advantage, allowing direct access to Taiwan via Pacific routes, helping to diversify natural gas transportation routes and geopolitical supply risks” said the Ministry. If the project stays on schedule, LNG deliveries to Taiwan could begin as early as 2032, the ministry added.
Developed by US-based Glenfarne, the Alaska LNG project is designed to produce 20 Mt/year of LNG. It involves transporting gas from Alaska’s North Slope through a 1,300 km pipeline to an LNG export facility in southern Alaska. Glenfarne plans to take a final investment decision by the end of 2026.
Donald Trump made the announcement separately, stating that Taiwan had agreed to purchase 30% of the project’s output. In February 2026, Taiwanese officials said the island would increase its purchases of US natural gas to account for approximately one-third of its LNG imports that year, while reducing purchases from other countries.
According to our data, Taiwan is a large importer of LNG (37.9 bcm in 2025, up from 17.8 bcm in 2010 and 7.1 bcm in 2000). In 2024, around 3/4 of the LNG was imported from 3 countries: Australia (38%), Qatar (25%), and United States (10%) (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
