Taiwan's national power company Taiwan Power (Taipower) has stopped the 936 MW first reactor of the Maanshan-1 nuclear power plant, located in the Pingtung County, which was commissioned on 27 July 1984 and whose 40-year operating licence has just expired. In April 2023, Taiwan's Nuclear Safety Commission reviewed and approved the decommissioning plan of the country's third nuclear power plant (Maanshan). The last remaining unit, 938 MW Maanshan-2, is expected to be stopped after 40 years of operations on 18 May 2025.
In 2023, nuclear accounted for 6% of Taiwan's power mix, with nearly 18 TWh. To offset the decommissioning of the nuclear power plant and the expected reduction in the share of coal in the power capacity (to 27%), new gas-fired power plants should be added to the grid. Nearly 8 GW of gas-fired capacities are currently under construction in the country and another 1.9 GW is planned.
