The government of Taiwan has announced plans to boost its installed solar power capacity by adding 3.7 GW of new capacity by 2021: under the new two-year Solar PV Promotion Plan, which extends the 2017-2018 strategy, 1.5 GW of new solar capacity should be added in 2019 and 2.2 GW in 2020. The government will focus on the adoption of solar power in industrial parks, on agricultural solar PV facilities and on solar projects jointly developed by the central and local governments.
Taiwan has implemented an ambitious solar policy, that has led to a surge in solar capacity, from 35 MW in 2010 to 1,245 MW in 2016 and 1,768 MW in 2017. In 2018, nearly 1 GW of new capacities were installed and the solar capacity exceeded 2.7 GW. Taiwan now expects the 3.7 GW to be added by the end of 2020 to raise solar capacity to 6.5 GW. The government also plans to reach 20 GW of solar PV capacity in 2025, of which 17 GW from ground-mounted PV systems and 3 GW from rooftop PV installations.
