Taipower plans to decommission Chinshan-1 nuclear reactor (Taiwan)

State-run Taiwanese utility Taipower plans to decommission its 604 MWe (636 MW gross) Chinshan-1 nuclear reactor (also spelled Jinshan) in Shimen, New Taipei City, Taiwan) following the expiration its 40-year operating license. The unit has been remaining idle for the last three years following a fuel fault which has been rectified. The decommissioning process will start once the company receives a decommissioning permit. It is expected to take about 25 years to complete.

Taiwanese regulations stipulate that the decommissioning plan for a power reactor must be submitted by the operator 3 years prior to the scheduled permanent shutdown. The Taiwanese regulator AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) approved Taipower's decommissioning plan for Chinshan-1 in June 2017.

The Chinshan plant's second reactor, namely Chinshan-2, is scheduled to be retired in July 2019. The two Chinshan units are boiling water reactors (BWRs) of 604 MW. They came online in 1978 and 1979, respectively.
