Portuguese energy developer TagEnergy has submitted its Morwell battery energy storage system (BESS) project to Australia’s environment department for assessment under the EPBC Act. Located in Victoria, the project is a stand-alone BESS with a capacity of up to 1 GW/4 GWh (four-hour storage duration). Construction is expected to be carried out in two phases.
TagEnergy acquired the Morwell project from Australian developer Ace Power in 2025 and has since referred several other Australian battery storage and wind projects for assessment under the EPBC Act. The federal referral comes after the project secured state-level approval earlier in 2026 (Energy Storage News, 30/09/2026).
The company is a clean energy developer with a portfolio approaching 12 GW across Australia, the UK, Spain, Portugal and France.
