The Ministry of Energy of Syria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an international consortium led by Qatar's construction company UCC Holding, to build five power projects worth a total US$7bn in the country. The projects would include four gas-fired CCGT power projects totalling 4 GW and one 1 GW solar power plant in southern Syria. Construction would start after final agreements are signed and would be completed within two years for the solar power plant and within three years for the CCGT power plants. Once completed, the five new projects are expected to address Syria's electricity deficit, covering half of the country's electricity needs.
Syria's power system has been suffering from severe damages since the start of the war in 2011, with persistent fuel shortages, which limits the available capacity at around 1.6 GW (compared to an installed capacity of 9.6 GW at the end of 2023).
