The local government of Western Australia (Australia) has announced the completion of its 500 MW/2.4 GWh Collie Battery Energy Storage System (CBESS) (Australian government press release, 08/02/2026). The AUD1.6bn (USD1.1bn) project was developed through the State-owned Synergy, located opposite the 350 MW coal-fired Collie Power Station set to close in 2027. It includes 640 battery containers and 160 inverter units. The BESS should have enough capacity to power about 785,000 homes for more than four hours.
The project represents the third grid-scale battery delivered in just over three years in Western Australia and the country’s largest operational BESS. Western Australia plans to exit State-owned coal by 2030 and bring on large-scale renewable generation and storage.
According to Enerdata’s Global Energy Research, Australia has reduced its coal capacity by 8 GW since 2010 to 23 GW in 2024, representing about 20% of the country’s total capacity (116 GW).
