Switzerland's final energy consumption remained stable in 2017

According to the Federal Office for Energy, final energy consumption slightly decreased in 2017 (-0.4%) to 850 TJ (20.3 Mtoe), owing to milder temperatures reducing heating needs. Energy substitution effects and improved energy efficiency also contributed to offset energy demand factors such as the economic and demographic growth, or the increase in the vehicle fleet and new buildings.

Oil product consumption declined by 2.4%, due to a 6.2% decline in demand for heating fuels, while transport fuel consumption - which account for more than 1/3 of final energy consumption - eroded slightly (-0.6%); the share of diesel continued to progress (slight decline of 0.3%, while gasoline sales fell by 3.1%). The consumption of electricity and gas increased in 2017 (-0.4% and +1.4%, respectively), and renewable consumption continued to increase, while coal consumption eroded again (-3.8% in 2017).

The shares of each sector remained broadly stable in 2017, with transport accounting for 36% of final consumption, followed by households (28%), industry (18.5%) and services (16%).
