Swiss power consumption rose by 0.6% in 2013

In 2013, electricity consumption in Switzerland rose by 0.6% to 53.9 TWh. Domestic consumption (including losses in transmission and distribution) reached 63.8 TWh. Production at Switzerland's power plants rose by 0.4% to 68.3 TWh, or 66.2 TWh after deduction of electricity consumed by storage pumps. This is the second-highest recorded figure for production after record year 2001. Production from hydropower plants was 0.8% lower than in the previous year, while nuclear power generation rose by 2.2% to 24.8 TWh (24.3 TWh in 2012). In 2013, the availability rate of Switzerland's nuclear power plants reached 86.1% (compared with 84.9% in 2012). Hydropower power plants contributed 57.9% to Switzerland's overall electricity production, followed by nuclear power plants (36.4%) and conventional thermal and other power plants (5.7%).

The electricity export surplus of 2.4 TWh in 2013 was 0.2 TWh higher than in 2012, while by contrast the monetary export trade balance in Swiss francs (CHF) fell to CHF 327m (€268m) compared with CHF 771m (€633m) in 2012.
