Swedish regional board approves OX2’s 5.5 GW Aurora offshore wind project

The County Administrative Board of the island of Gotland, off the east coast of Sweden, has greenlighted the development of the 5.5 GW Aurora offshore wind project. The wind project, which is being developed by Sweden’s OX2 and Ingka Investments, is expected to be fully completed by 2035 and to be able to deliver up to 24 TWh/year of electricity.

The first phase of the project could deliver around 6 TWh/year of power and be commissioned by 2030, pending necessary government approvals. The Aurora project is located about 22 km south of the island of Gotland and more than 30 km east of the island of Öland in the Baltic Sea. The full project will allow a reduction in emissions of about 14 MtCO2 and will provide energy to about 5 million Swedish households once completed.

At the end of 2023, Sweden had only 193 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (against over 16 GW of onshore wind capacity). The country aims to reach an entirely "fossil-free" electricity system by 2040.
