The Swedish state-owned power utility Vattenfall is investigating the possibility to construct 2.8 GW of new nuclear capacity at its existing Ringhals site on the western coast of Sweden. The company submitted a notification to the country’s transmission system operator Svenska Kraftnät for the project, which could enter operation in 2032. However, the project, which may include at least two small modular reactors (SMRs), is currently still at the feasibility stage. Vattenfall has not made any decision to build new nuclear power.
Ringhals AB, an affiliate of Vattenfall (70.4%) and Sydkraft Nuclear (29.6%), owns and operates two reactors at Ringhals: Ringhals-3 (1,117 MW) and Ringhals-4 (1,171 MW), which were commissioned in 1981 and 1983.
