Total energy consumption in Sweden is expected to increase by 5% to 523 TWh between 2020 and 2024, according to the Swedish Energy Agency. The industrial sector's energy use should increase by 5.1% to 143 TWh in 2024, triggered by a higher electricity consumption; industrial energy consumption could even rise to 151 TWh if all permits for new establishments in the industry are approved). Energy demand from transport is expected to remain relatively stable (higher electricity use in road transport gradually reducing the consumption of liquid fuels). Energy demand in the residential sector is foreseen to rise by 3.6% to 145 TWh over 2020-2024 but will depend on the weather.
Over the period, total power generation should rise by 14% to 184 TWh in 2024, spurred by a 68% increase in wind power generation to 47 TWh. Electricity exports should increase to 41 TWh in 2024 (lower exports if strong industrial development boosting electricity demand).
