All major permits are now in place for the 1.2 GW Kattegat Syd offshore wind park, located off the coast of Falkenberg in Sweden. The construction and operation of the 1.2 GW offshore wind farm were authorised in May 2023. In April 2025, the Swedish government approved the installation of submarine cables for Kattegat Syd — including both export and inter-array cables — as well as detailed seabed surveys of the project area. Vattenfall has also secured the required grid concession for the installation and operation of both offshore and onshore export cables. Vattenfall anticipates that Kattegat Syd could be commissioned in the early 2030s, although a final investment decision (FID) has not yet been made. Once operational, the wind park is expected to generate approximately 5 TWh/year of electricity.
As of the end of 2024, Sweden had only 193 MW of installed offshore wind capacity, compared to around 17 GW of onshore wind. The country aims to achieve a fully fossil-free electricity system by 2040.
