Sweden considers increasing nuclear power threefold by 2045

Sweden forecasts that the country’s climate transition will require a doubling of electricity production to about 300 TWh/year. In order to reach such numbers, nuclear power could account for a large part of that increase. The country produced nearly 173 TWh (all energy source considered) in 2022.

To reach such an increase, the Swedish Government is considering increasing its nuclear capacity threefold by 2045, which would be equivalent to building 10 new nuclear reactors in the country. In addition, for such a plan, the government would work to remove limits on the number of nuclear reactors allowed in Sweden and simplify the permit process for new reactors.

As of end-2022, nuclear represented about 14% of Sweden’s installed capacity with 6.9 GW and nearly 30% of its power generation with 51.5 TWh.
