Sweden approves bill to install new nuclear power reactors as of 2024

The Swedish government has approved a new bill that removes the country’s limit on the number of nuclear reactors in operation, allowing more than 10 reactors to be in operation at the same time. The legislative amendments also allow nuclear reactors to be built on new sites (in locations other than the currently permitted areas in Forsmark, Ringhals and Oskarshamn in Southern Sweden) starting from 1 January 2024.

In November 2023, Sweden announced its plans to build the equivalent of two new conventional nuclear reactors in the country by 2035 as part of its plan to have the equivalent of 10 new reactors by 2045. According to the government forecasting, there’s a need of doubling its electricity production to about 300 TWh/year (from 173 TWh in 2022) to meet an expected surge in power demand from the industry and transport sectors.

As of end-2022, nuclear represented about 14% of Sweden’s installed capacity with 6.9 GW and nearly 30% of its power generation with 51.5 TWh.
